Prizes from AYC
LM asked RK to explain to the meeting his thoughts on prizes this year supplied by AYC. He felt that the quality was appalling. The glasses had no class and no event with only the position for the Lapwing Championships and the regatta glasses had just the position and year. With twenty entries this year in the championships and an entry fee of £25 each, it was felt that more needed to be offered by the AYC. RK added that this was evident in other classes too. DM explained that many people do not collect their prizes and that AYC have a surplus and it is a cost saving situation. Junior prizes were also mentioned and these need to be looked into. RK explained that the sailing committee need to liase with the general committee with regard to prizes and there seemed to be no liasing between the Secretary and the sailing committee. DM said that he resorted to getting the cups engraved himself rather than waiting for the AYC to do it. RK said that he was pursuing this matter with the Commodore and a proposal is needed from the Lapwing Class to give to the Sailing committee on this matter, particularly with regard to engraving (event, date and position, possibly to 5th position), speed up engraving process and make sure that the cups are returned promptly..
Lapwing changes
It was agreed that the change of use so that the red sails can be used as storm sails in windy weather has been a success and more lapwings have been out racing because of this change. LM explained to everyone that the moving of the jib cleats had had a mixed reception – TM felt that it had been successful but KZ had moved her cleats back up onto the gunnel. DM mentioned that this change would make the sheeting angle wrong for the sail and RK replied that the Lapwing class is a one design class and so, no changes should be made unless it was for safety reasons. RK also commended Alastair Ritchie on Peewit’s return to the AYC but unfortunately she has not been rebuilt as a lapwing and there cannot take part in club racing. LM mentioned Ian Liddell’s email which had been circulated to all Lapwing members and added that Peewit was built far cheaper than an original Lapwing. However, it was reiterated that the Lapwings are a strict One-Design class and should remain so. DM stated that the National 12’s had not stuck to the One-Design principle and it had eventually killed the class. RK mentioned that the Loch Long fleet were having the same issues. LM stated that everyone seemed happy with their new sails.
70th Anniversary
LM explained to the group that next year will be the 70th anniversary of the Lapwing and the class captains have some ideas on how to celebrate this occasion.
A Lapwing sail past
Exhibition about the history of the Lapwing
Celebration dinner
A Lapwing float in the carnival
RK thought that a special 70th anniversary cup might be awarded. It was decided that the celebrations would be over the lapwing championship weekend with the sailpast at an alternative weekend in the summer. Any other ideas from members would be gratefully received from the class captains.
Class Captaincy
It was agreed that LM and FL would continue as class captains and the group congratulated them on all their hard work, especially with regards to the Junior Lapwing revival. RK mentioned that it might be a good idea to have a Junior Lapwing Class Captain as was in the past. LT also mentioned that the Lapwing Class boat ‘Knot’ had been a great success with Ladies Who Launch. LM stated to the group that funding was available for Knot to continue as a class boat from the sale of ‘Chickadee’.
Any Other Business
RK mentioned that inspections of Lapwings need to be completed adequately with regard to rigging, taping of shrouds and safety. LM suggested that the class have a rigging workshop at the beginning of the season for anyone who is not sure, especially new owners. She also thought it might be a good idea to have a maintenance workshop too.
SR asked about the new AYC rule concerning lifejackets and the group explained that as it was a rule, it had to be adhered to.
RK asked whether a winter get together might be a good idea and the class captains will look into this.
Date of next meeting
The next AGM will be on the Silver lapwings weekend in 2017 at a time to be confirmed.
