Last weekend 15 Lapwing owners braved the cold and got together to listen to Duncan Matthew's tips about Lapwing winter maintenance. He covered sails, mast and boom, foils and the hull. He also told us about the extensive work he is doing on his own Lapwing, Skua 47. There are pictures of Skua's new ribs being steamed and fitted on the Lapwing Facebook Page. Many thanks to Duncan for leading an excellent workshop.
For all those who have contacted me about the Lapwing Maintenance Workshop, here are the details.
Meet at 11am at Valley Farm, Middleton, postcode is IP17 3NA. Duncan Matthew will be leading the session and will talk first about winter maintenance for sails, rigging, mast and boom, and hull and foils. A second part of the talk will be about restoration. Please bring a packed lunch, we will provide tea and coffee and cakes and biscuits. Some of us are meeting again for Sunday Lunch at the Dolphin at Thorpeness. Please let me know if you want to join us there . Learn how to keep your Lapwing in tip-top condition and become confident to do its annual maintenance yourself. There will be a Lapwing Maintenance Workshop on Saturday 25th February at 11 a.m., led by Duncan Matthew, an experienced wooden boat owner. All are welcome. Please contact the Class Captains for more details.
Fifteen new sets of Lapwing sails will be delivered to the Aldeburgh Yacht Club next week, ready for their owners to collect. Here is a picture of some of the white mainsails nearing completion. See more pictures on the Lapwing Facebook page. The Lapwing garden party last Saturday was blessed with a sunny warm evening, good company, lots of chat about the coming season all washed down with glasses of Pimms. It was lovely to see so many people there, and see you all on the river soon!
Pipit is finally ready to go back to Aldeburgh and to be sailed. It has taken a lot more work than we had anticipated to get her seaworthy, and we are crossing our fingers that she leaks significantly less than last year! The jib sheet cleats have been moved down to a new position in the boat, as agreed at the Lapwing AGM last year. We wanted to continue to allow the cleats to move, so we mounted the tracks on a batten fixed between the two forward thwarts. Seaswift 10 had old floorboards that were in so many pieces that they could be patched up no more. David Copp has made new ones from mahogany, and they look great.
