The Little Garrett Cup Race 18th July 2015.
Phoenix, 67, wins.
The Little Garrett Cup was held today over its traditional course to Iken Cliff and back. There were only two starters, Gannett 35 with Simon Reid helming and Conka Goyder crewing and Phoenix 67 with Lizzi and Catherine Thistlethwayte on board.
The wind was strong, a good force 5 with gusts up to force 6. Phoenix was using the red sails due to the strong wind.
There was a mix-up over the start times, but both boats did start and shot off up river. It is usually a very long race but less than two hours had passed before red sails were spotted returning. Sadly, no white sails could be seen.
Phoenix crossed the finishing line in style. A few minutes later, Gannett was towed in. She had capsized near Brick Dock on the return leg of the race, and turned turtle. Unfortunately her centreboard was lost, but both helm and crew were in good spirits.
Phoenix reported an excellent and exhilarating sail, with the boat planing at times, quite a feat for a Lapwing with red sails.
One mystery is the Cup itself. It was not available to be presented. Does anyone know of its whereabouts?

Acheson Trophy 5th September 2015.
Whaup 51 wins.
Silver Lapwings 20th September 2015.
Tringa 57 wins.
On Sunday 20th September 2015, 7 Lapwings were at the start at 4pm for the SIlver Lapwing race to Little Japan, and two more missed the start but sailed up to Little Japan anyway. The Silver Lapwing race starts at the AYC club start and finishes on the beach at Little Japan. Apart from Elbow, there are no course marks on the way, and many of the competitors made their way through the creeks on the way up river. The winds were extremely light but the sun was shining and it was a joy to be on the River Alde. It was a tight contest for first and second place, with Tringa arriving only about two boat lengths ahead of Whaup.
The Lapwings were joined by a couple of motorboats bringing well-wishers and tea and cake, which was enjoyed by all on the beach. The adults chatted while taking in the absolute beauty and serenity of our surroundings, and the children ran up and down the beach and sailed each other's boats round the bay. At last we had to pack up and sail home. The wind had dropped to almost nothing but had shifted so we could go through the creeks on the way home as well. In a moment of absolute calm near Stanny a game of throwing and (not) catching a ball was played by some of the boats, and once round Elbow, some of the younger sailors decided that swimming was quicker than sailing.
The Silver Lapwings was a blissful end to the Lapwing Season, and we look forward to seeing you all again next summer and to seeing even more Lapwings on the River Alde.
